an introduction to shadows

we are all drawn to darkness. it shouldn't be a mystery why.

it has, since we were children, been attached to our feet

...to dance with.

Be careful, she'll be whisked off to Never Land for being so adorable!

The first time I ever realized my own shadow I was two, and was terrified to death, so they tell me. I tried to get rid of it trying to jump up and down and failed each time. Your Fable isn't a child of fears, she's embracing her shadow with interest. That is so beautiful. Tells a lot about her.

Is she walking?

Dana | 12:14 PM

WOW! I LOVE that last photo.

It is always nice when the smaller things in life make us happy.

So beautiful :)
I was always terrified of my shadow when I was little because I thought it was my evil twin. I had a bit of an over active imagination.

I have a question that doesn't pertain to this at all. Do you allow Archer and Fable to watch TV?

This has recently come up and my husband and I are on opposite sides.

I say that a little TV is ok. Not using TV as a babysitter but a little TV every now and then isn't bad. I love movies and hope to pass on the same love to my children.

My husband is totally against TV for children. He thinks that they will become addicted and the things they see on TV will influence them in sometimes bad ways.

Thanks Much :)

Wow.I love your photo-poem. It is amazing!! We are attracted to the dark sometimes rather than the light. I wonder if it does start in childhood.

Thanks for this.

My daughter loves her shadow and laughs like crazy whenever she sees it. I love how children find joy in the smallest things and I wish it didn't change as we get older.

Love these photos :)

Lindsey | 5:51 PM

Gorgeous. I love shadow photos, always have, but the way that Fable is fascinated with her shadow, and, as you say, dancing with it ... incredible.

So beautiful; Fable, the photos, the fact that you capture your children's lives through pictures and your words. I love it. It's so sweet, your photoetry entries. And something great that they can look back on. <3

I couldn't help but remember Robert Louis Stevenson:

My Shadow

I HAVE a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.

The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow—
Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow;
For he sometimes shoots up taller like an India-rubber ball,
And he sometimes gets so little that there’s none of him at all.

He hasn’t got a notion of how children ought to play,
And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way.
He stays so close beside me, he’s a coward you can see;
I’d think shame to stick to nursie as that shadow sticks to me!

One morning, very early, before the sun was up,
I rose and found the shining dew on every buttercup;
But my lazy little shadow, like an arrant sleepy-head,
Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed.

walking girl over there! Go fable!

KatBouska | 9:32 PM

I used to nanny a little girl who used to yell at me while staring at her shadow and shaking her arms around like a grown up. Love these pics!

Christina | 3:00 PM

Ooh, these are spectacular Rebecca. I love the stark contrast of the shadows...and Fable, as usual, is breathtaking.

Shadows are amazing and (as the Jungian inside of me knows full well): they are necessary. Balance!

What type of camera/lens do you use?

tvchiq :) | 6:52 AM

That is so funny....just this weekend, my 2 & 1/2 year old son and I were looking at our shadows--and he was pretty fascinated...I didn't have my camera, but I'm definitely gonna take some pix soon...you took great ones... :)
