She Smiles.

No one believes me when I say she can smile.

"It's gas," everyone says...

"...Newborns don't smile. They don't know how to yet."

Ah, yes. But she isn't just a newborn...

...She's Fable:

And she absolutely smiles.

Pianist's fingers! :)

Issa | 1:26 PM

That is such a smile. Mine smiles too and people argue with me about it. He even laughed the other day.

Some babies are just smilers, I guess.

Angella | 1:35 PM

Anonymous | 1:50 PM

Oh dearlordjesus this baby is just amazing. You have got to be so head over heels it's not even funny.

Of course she can smile! That gas thing? Urban legend.

A | 2:51 PM

I totally believe it! My daughter did the same thing, and it made me so angry when everyone was like "oh, no, just gas!" Be glad you've got proof!

Anonymous | 3:09 PM

i believe you!! i knew a baby that smiled that young- it was insane!!! my oldest could whistle at 9 months and no one believed me because she wouldn't do it in front of people (kind of like the singing frog) until one day she did and everyone was like OH MY GOD!!!
i totally believe you.

Anonymous | 3:22 PM

Dude, I've been having the worst day/week/month and this is another point for the Everything is Right with the World Team.

Amanda | 3:32 PM

Those pictures made my day. Thank you.

Avital | 5:18 PM

Those pictures [almost] makes me want to have another baby. My son smiled at three weeks and no one believed me and I wish I had been able to capture such a magical series of pictures as you have here. Thanks for sharing them with us!

Maria Melee | 5:28 PM

My son smiled at four days old and on. All the time. :)

She is BEAUTIFUL. And so alert.

What a special little girl you've got there.

Robert Hudson | 6:09 PM

In my expert opinion, that is a smiling damn baby.

Keri | 6:32 PM

YES, she smiles! I love her dimple and how she resembles Archer when she smiles. =D

Unknown | 6:38 PM

Beautiful little girl, beautiful smile and beautiful little dimple.

Anonymous | 6:49 PM

I believe ya!

Dianna | 6:49 PM

She has got to be the most beautiful newborn I've ever seen. Perfect skin, perfect little lips and of course a perfect smile! You and Hal sure do produce some gorgeous children.

Anonymous | 6:51 PM

I believe you!! My baby first smiled at 3 weeks and I also was tired of people telling me it was gas. Fable is beautiful.

Superdumb Supervillain | 7:00 PM

what a gorgeous girl! her coloring is amazing and yes, i do believe that is a genuine smile and an impish twinkle in her eye, as well...

Anonymous | 7:53 PM

i smile incessantly when i get to look at your face (and boobies) all day, too. so what's the big whoop?

Amelia Sprout | 8:01 PM

There is no way in the world that is gas.

Rachel | 8:06 PM

Holy hell. She's gorgeous.

kittenpie | 8:13 PM

OMG not only does she smile (which Bun did earlier than he should have, too, as did Pumpkinpie, so I always question that "wisdom"), but it's GORGEOUS. I love, love, love the dimples!

Rachael | 8:14 PM

Who decided that young babies couldn't smile anyhow? I don't believe them. She is TOTALLY smiling. She is so cute.

Leigh | 8:46 PM

it infuriates me when peole say that babies don't smile! outrageous! fable is SO sweet and gorgeous. and what a smile.

Anonymous | 10:50 PM

babies totally smile, newborns can mimic facial expressions pretty well actually. what people are generally talking about is the "social smile" which happens around six months in response to interaction/ amusement as opposed to mimicking their mom's facial expression. (The More You Know...) but I wouldn't be surprised if she was way advanced in smiling, like she is in general beauty and adorableness and perfection.

that's right. I said advanced in perfection.

Anonymous | 1:27 AM

OMG she's soooo beautiful! It looks as if she discovers that you are there, and then the smiles come!

Anonymous | 3:17 AM

awww and she has dimples! absolutely gorgeous! :)

Bethany Bassett | 4:14 AM

Oh, those dimples! My baby girl started smiling on purpose at 3-weeks-old, and I'm glad I had the pictures too to convince people it wasn't a fluke. Fable is enchanting!

April | 4:25 AM

well... maybe it is gas, but if so, it must feel damn good :-)

motherbumper | 4:56 AM

Oh yes, that is definitely a smile. She IS Fable GGC after all.

Heather | 5:10 AM

Awwww! What a sweet little smile! I'm sure there was a precious coo that came along with it!

Prasti | 5:33 AM

what a sweet little girl.

Anonymous | 6:11 AM

My little girl Emma is the same age as Fable and she smiles too despite what everyone says. She started smiling right after she was born and a nurse in the NICU actually had the nerve to tell us that social smiling doesn't start until 2 months. Well I disagree! Fable is darling!

Anonymous | 6:15 AM

aww, that made me smile. She's so beautiful!

SciFi Dad | 6:19 AM

That is most definitely a smile.

My son (born the day before Fable) also smiles when I zerbert under his chin, and it's smiling, not gas, damnit.

Maddy'sMama | 6:25 AM

newborns definitely smile. In the first month, smiling just means that they have an inner peace/happiness. Then they start with social smiling in another month or so. Mine smiled all the time when she was that little and people told me the same thing- it's just gas. But I knew it just meant she was happy inside - made me feel like I was doing something right.

mary catherine | 6:39 AM

my newborn (now almost a year old!) totally smiled, right away, and there was no gas involved. there is no fart that enjoyable anyway, i don't think. :)

such a beauty.

Anonymous | 6:42 AM

Awwww- that's a total smile - she's beautiful!

Chicky Chicky Baby | 7:31 AM

Damn, my uterus just exploded.

That is one beautiful newborn with the most heartbreaking smile.

Sally | 8:10 AM

Of course she smiles! She's your daughter!

Anonymous | 8:18 AM

Holy Shiz your daughter is so beautiful!!!!!

Anonymous | 8:47 AM

Definitely a smile.

Definitely a gorgeous girl.

Anonymous | 8:51 AM

so clearly I have been studying autism too much... it's normally not 6 months (the cutoff), it's 2 months, as everyone pointed out. anyway here is a link in case you are curious. I was :)

The Broken Man | 8:55 AM

That's a smile. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Glad you'ver got such a happy baby - hope ours turns out that way too! :)

The Broken Man

Anonymous | 8:57 AM

My son didn't smile during his waking hours until the usual newborn age. But from the very first night, he would smile and giggle very loudly all through his sleep. That deep belly baby giggle, all through his dreams.

Steph(anie) | 8:57 AM

That is absolutely a smile, a BEAUTIFUL smile.

T with Honey | 9:03 AM

Who are you going to believe: a few scientists who claim that babies don't smile till they are older or millions and generations of mothers and fathers that know their baby smiled at them?

Yeah, that's a smile and we parents know it!

Anonymous | 9:27 AM

She's so beautiful. She's full of serenity - you can just tell.

Fraulein | 9:55 AM

That does my heart good, today. Brava Fable!

Anonymous | 9:58 AM

This made my day.

Jillian | 10:40 AM

I think it's a load of crap when people say newborn's can't smile!!! How do they KNOW? She is adorable and I love her smile! And...she looks so much like Archer. It's so cute!

Anonymous | 11:35 AM

If you believe babies can't smile and 1000 other old wives tales that travel down the generations, then I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you in Brooklyn - dirt cheap.

Anonymous | 12:29 PM

FANTABULOUS post. I really needed that little dose of awesomeness today. My teeth ache from all the sweetness.

Anonymous | 12:42 PM

the dimples!!!!! you're killin' me!!!! AAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Sonja Streuber, PMP(R), SSBB | 1:00 PM

What a gorgeous little girl you have ... and that's totally a BIG smile.

Anonymous | 1:41 PM

Yes, they smile. Two of my three were born smiling. Delivery room staff couldn't believe it. An hour after my first son was born, my DH was holding him and making faces at him. My DH stuck out his tongue and the baby copied him.
They can do all kinds of things, including having a distinct preference for music that was played while they were in utero.
My youngest son spoke first first complete sentence at six months. He said, "Mommy, Daddy, please don't go!"
My DH and I and the nanny all heard it. It freaked us out, a little.

Anonymous | 1:50 PM

Babies do to smile - all three of mine did. And you have a gorgeous baby girl and how precious that you captured that whole series of smiling - priceless!!! You'll have to use the picture of her smiling in her senior page in her yearbook (if they do that there). Congratulations on a beautiful family.

Listen Up, MoFos! | 2:58 PM

Oh my! It just makes your heart all warm and fussy, doesn't it? You are so blessed!

Anonymous | 5:35 PM

Oh my. Trying hard not to cry here, heh. She's beautiful. What a wonderful smile. Gorgeous.

Erin | 5:50 PM

She's beautiful, and yes, she absolutely smiles.

Anonymous | 7:31 PM

And you, mama, are super talented with the camera.

Rhea | 8:19 PM

Those are smiles, adorable, beautiful and genuine!! (gas or not gas, they're awesome)

Anonymous | 7:39 AM

So heart-burstingly beautiful...

She is just so awesome. So are you for all the wonderful pics you keep capturing of her and Archer. Nicely done!!

Anne | 12:28 PM

It's too much - she's just gorgeous! Beautiful smile already. (She definitely knows what she's doing, that Fable.)

Anonymous | 1:43 PM

Wow. She just brought tears to my eyes. Such a pretty baby.

Maggie May | 2:14 PM

what else can i say but

sweetmelissa818 | 8:32 PM

I honestly believe that people who say newborns don't smile are completely full of shit! Both my little girls smiled. It's one of the things that helps you through the not sleeping times.

Jenn | 9:05 AM

Okay, you need to just quit it with all this cuteness Fable, baby. I know you're still so new to the wide wide world and not really in tune with worldly "dos and don'ts", but really, it's too much.

You see, I can't have babies any more...well, technically I can , but the big hairy man I am married to cannot. And I have to say you're kind of making me want to make a run for the Fed Ex man or that homeless guy I see standing at Wal-Mart all the time.
And really, truly, I'm not usually such an immoral soul, but if breaking a few commandments would render me someone as beautifully angelic as yourself, well, I'd break them all.

Anonymous | 3:22 PM

I hate people who say that it's just gas! Screw that! These babies, they are smiling because they are happy!

She's stunning and that's an awesome set of photos.

It's a smile no doubt. The same smile my 5 year old daughter gets each time she tickles the tickleme plant we are growing.
